ADVERBIAL DENSITY AND NARRATIVE TEXTURE: A STYLISTIC STUDY OF THE BEAUTYFUL ONES ARE NOT YET BORN BY AYI KWEI ARMAH

Abstract

This study examines the stylistic importance of adverbial density in Armah's The Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born. It uses a stylistic approach in analysing some selected passages from the novel to identify and group the use of adverbials of manner, time, and place with the aim of determining their preponderance use and stylistic functions in the narrative. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis, the study reveals a noticeable concentration of adverbial expressions that resonate richly with the descriptive richness and narrative texture of the text. The findings indicate that temporal adverbials foreground the sense of stagnation and repetitive experience that characterizes the socio-political environment of post-independence Ghana, while manner adverbials intensify the psychological portrayal of characters and their responses to corruption and moral disillusionment. Spatial adverbials further help to situate actions within environments symbolically associated with decay and societal frustration. The study therefore demonstrates that adverbial density functions as an important stylistic resource through which the author reinforces thematic concerns and heightens narrative description. By foregrounding grammatical patterning in literary discourse, the paper contributes to stylistic studies that explore the relationship between linguistic choices and meanings in African prose fiction.
